Caterpillar Container Forklifts - Specifically Designed to Load and Unload Large, Heavy Freight Containers
Container Forklift
A container forklift is specially designed to unload and load big, heavy freight containers. They are used to transport freight off and on truck beds, trains and ships. Container forklifts are the most durable and largest types of forklifts made. They have to be extremely maneuverable on terrain that is uneven and have sufficient torque and power to lift bulky containers safely. Usually, they have big pneumatic tires and heavy-duty diesel engines.
Like all kinds of forklifts, a container forklift uses forks to lift the containers. Forks have to be positioned to ensure the load is secure during transport. Several container forklift models are just meant to raise the containers several meters off the ground. Other container handlers use another technique for carrying containers to greater heights. A container handler makes use of a device attached to the front of the vehicle to clamp down on either end of the container like jaws. The machine is counterbalanced with weights to maintain stability.
Carrying and transferring containers is the main purpose of a container forklift. Standard forklifts do not have enough reach for working in ports. The forks are rated according to the maximum weight they can handle. The capabilities of the forklift should be posted prominently in the cockpit and should never be exceeded.
Using Caterpillar Pneumatic Tire Forklifts Correctly
Use a Pneumatic Forklift
Pneumatic forklifts are common in shipping and warehouse operations. Also called pump trucks or pallet trucks, they are used in order to move supplies and things around on wooden pallets using metal forks mounted on a wheeled counterweight. The counterweight includes a pump which lifts the forks off the ground. A pallet truck is designed to be operated by a single individual.
Pallet trucks must be operated carefully to avoid loss of control while raising heavy loads. Machine should be checked prior to operating. Clear the wheels area of any obstructions. Check that the handle smoothly turns. The pallet must be carefully stacked to ensure that nothing would fall off during transportation.
On the end of the pallet truck's handle, squeeze the level situated on the inside of the metal loop in order to lower the forks and release the air in the pump. The forks can then be pushed into the slots of the pallet. The forks must be centered to ensure even distribution of the pallet's weight across them. Lift the forks from the ground by pumping the pneumatic lift's handle until the pallet has completely cleared the ground. Do not raise the pallet very high or the forklift can unbalance.
Move the pallet by pulling on the handle and dragging it behind you. It is not safe to push the pallet ahead of you as the momentum could cause it to go out of control. Slowly take turns and don't try to stop suddenly. Stop slowly, squeeze the lever, and the forks will lower to the ground. Lastly, remove the forks from the pallet by pulling them out. Return the pallet truck to its permanent place.
