Forklift Parts in More Detail
A lift truck is made of numerous parts. The key parts that make up a lift truck are the truck frame, the engine components, the overhead guard, the wheels and the tilt cylinders. Also, a forklift consists of a variety of attachments. All the components which make up a lift truck are of equal importance because they work together to make the operation of the equipment possible. The following paragraphs describe in detail some of the forklift parts.
The Overhead Guard - The overhead guard is really the lift truck's metal roof, that sits atop the operator cab. It's job is to protect the operator whilst they are using the machinery. The overhead guard makes sure that nothing falling from above onto the truck would damage the controls in the cab or harm the driver. The overhead guard is essential to the frame assembly on various units.
The Mast - the mast is a vertical assembly made of interlocking rails and mounted either to the forklift frame or the front axle. The mast provides lateral stability and enables the forks to move upwards and down. The interlocking rails may either have rollers or bushings as guides. There are a couple of ways the mast could be operated: hydraulically by one or more hydraulic cylinders or chain operated with motive power provided by a hydraulic motor.
Forklift Carriage - the forks and different other kinds of attachments are mounted to the carriage. The carriage is connected to the mast directly to the hydraulic cylinder or it is attached by chains. To be able to allow the forks to be lowered and raised, the carriage can have either rollers or bushings to guide it in the interlocking mast rails.
Load Back Rest - While the carriage is raised to full height, there is a back rest made of metal which prevents a load from falling backwards. The back rest is either bolted or welded on to the carriage.
Lift Truck Attachments - There are numerous kinds of attachments that could be fixed directly to the forklifts carriage. Forks are the most common attachment. In addition, there are L-shaped members, rotators, rollers, roll clamps, pole handlers and so forth. These various attachments are very helpful for moving various types of loads.
