A skid-steer loader is actually an engine powered machinery that consists of a small and rigid frame. It is outfitted along with lift arms which are used to attach to different labor saving attachments and tools. Normally, skid-steer loaders are four-wheel drive vehicles that have the left-hand side wheels operating independent of the right-hand side wheels, although some models are equipped along with tracks instead. Operation
Usually a skid-steer loader can be used on a jobsite instead of a large excavator by digging a hole from within. First, the skid-steer loader digs a ramp leading to the edge of the desired excavation, and then it uses the ramp so as to excavate material out of the hole. As the excavation deepens, the machinery reshapes the ramp making it steeper and longer. This is a remarkably useful method for digging beneath a structure where there is not enough overhead clearance for the boom of a big excavator. Like for instance, this is a common situation when digging a basement beneath an existing home or structure.
There is much flexibility in the accessories that the skid steer loaders are capable of. Like for example, the traditional bucket of many of these loaders can be replaced with various attachments that are powered by the loader's hydraulic system, including pallet forks, backhoes, tree spades, sweepers, mowers, snow blades and cement mixers. Several other popular specialized attachments and buckets include trenchers, angle booms, dumping hoppers, wood chipper machines, grapples, tillers, stump grinders rippers, wheel saws and snow blades.
History
During the year 1957, the very first 3-wheeled, front-end loader was invented in Rothsay, in the state of Minnesota by brothers Cyril and Louis Keller. The brothers invented the loader to be able to help a farmer mechanize the method of cleaning turkey manure from his barn. This equipment was compact and light and included a rear caster wheel which enabled it to maneuver and turn around within its own length, enabling it to perform the same jobs as a traditional front-end loader.
The Melroe brothers of Melroe Manufacturing Company in Gwinner, N.D. acquired in 1958, the rights to the Keller loader. The company then employed the Keller brothers to assist with development of the loader. The M-200 Melroe was the end result of this partnership. This particular model was a self-propelled loader that was introduced to the market in 1958. The M-200 Melroe featured a two independent front drive wheels, a rear caster wheel, a 12.9 HP engine and a 750 lb lift capacity. By the year 1960, they replaced the caster wheel together with a rear axle and introduced the very first 4 wheel skid steer loader that was referred to as the M-400.
The M-400 shortly became the Melroe Bobcat. Normally the term "Bobcat" is used as a generic term for skid-steer loaders. The M-440 had an 1100 lb rated operating capacity and was powered by a 15.5 HP engine. The company continued the skid-steer development into the middle part of the nineteen sixties and introduced the M600 loader.
